The leadsman’s platforms, one on either side of A Deck forward, folded down and provided a place for a seaman to stand while he "heaved the lead" (performed soundings to determine the depth of the water). When not in use, the platform, made of teak, was folded up and secured. Here is a close-up of a painting of mine done many years ago showing the port platform substantially as it appears today. If you watch the opening scenes in TITANIC, you can briefly see the starboard platform as it looked in 1995. (Ken Marschall)
