Excerpts from The Sand Pebbles, 20th Century Fox, 1966

(close window when finished)

The Watch Officer orders a change in speed.
The Telegraph Man moves the levers and “overshoots” the command …
… to ring a bell in the engine room…
… and then brings the handles to the correct order.
When the order has been sent, he reports to the Watch Officer.
Down in the engine room, the center arrow moves from the old order….
… “overshoots” to ring the bell…
… and settles on the new command. To show the order is understood and being carried out, the Engineer takes the handle…
… again “overshoots” the order (so the bridge unit rings)…
… and replies with the correct order.
After which, the order is carried out.
